While I have always been comfortable with students using phones in class e.g. for basic (and not so basic) calculations I am aware other teaching staff are far from at ease with this scenario. Today phones are mini computers with very capable graphing and calculator functions which in themselves, arguably, are redundant with the ability for the phone to go online and utilise web-based calculators and tools (like Wolfram Alpha).

However, the debate continues with two articles recently highlighting this. One article demonstrated the use of mobile phones in class while the other talks about the possible ban of the devices in school.

Use of phones in class: http://t.co/flXZgxyY
Possible ban: http://t.co/y6af8QO1
